Key Components
The Frame: A high-quality, deep-set wooden or metal frame (often in dark finishes like black, cherry, or espresso) provides the structure. The depth of the frame is crucial, as it creates a "shadow box" effect, allowing space for the three-dimensional items (medals, dog tags) to rest comfortably behind the protective glass or acrylic.
The Matting: A custom-cut, acid-free archival mat board is the primary element that organizes the display.
Color: The matting is typically chosen to complement the service branch's colors (e.g., deep blue, forest green, or black with a thin inner bevel of gold or silver) or simply a neutral color like cream or white to make the items stand out.
Custom Openings: Precision-cut openings are created for each item:
Rectangular or square openings for photos.
A specialized, small slot or pocket to secure the dog tags (often suspended or placed in a small well).
Openings for securing the medals and/or ribbons.
The Memorabilia: The heart of the display:
Photos: One or more carefully selected photographs—perhaps a portrait in uniform, a candid photo from a deployment, or a shot from a promotion/retirement ceremony.
Dog Tags: A set of official or replica dog tags, often placed near a photo or centered for prominence.
Medals/Ribbons: Service medals, achievement medals, or specific ribbons are mounted either suspended from their ribbons or pinned directly to the backing board. They are typically arranged in order of precedence.
Design Elements & Customization
Engraved Plate: A small, metallic plaque (brass or silver) is often included at the bottom or center. It is engraved with personalized information, such as:
The service member's name and rank.
Branch of Service (e.g., "United States Army").
Dates of Service or a specific deployment/event.
A meaningful quote or citation.
Backing: The interior of the box features a padded, contrasting fabric backing (velvet or felt) to securely hold the pins and add a touch of elegance.
Layout: The overall layout is meticulously planned for balance and impact, guiding the viewer's eye through the story told by the items. For example, a formal photo might be centered, flanked by medals below and a small note or dog tags above.
